L V Prasad Eye Institute and the Government of Liberia have partnered to open the Liberia Eye Center at the John F Kennedy Memorial Medical Center in Monrovia.
The facility was inaugurated by President of Liberia, Dr Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. The Liberia Eye Center with the latest medical equipment is supported by Lions Clubs International Foundation and Operation Eyesight Universal. Additionally LVPEI is also providing guidance and assistance in human resource planning, recruitment, training and in developing and implementing a countrywide community eye health program.
An ophthalmologist from LVPEI has been deputed at the Liberia Eye Centre to manage and implement standard operating systems and processes. In the past four months, the centre has examined over 2,000 outpatients and has performed over 100 surgeries. To help improve the efficiency of eye care, identify the burden of eye diseases, standardise care and quantify impact delivered to the people of Liberia, LVPEI’s eye Smart Electronic Medical Record System was installed at the Center this month.
“Another significant milestone is the first ever corneal transplant surgery performed in the country at the Liberia Eye Center by an ophthalmologist from LVPEI on the same day. This is the first time that LVPEI is directly involved in the operations of an Eye Center outside India. This followed a visit by the President of the Republic of Liberia to LVPEI in September 2013, when on her invitation LVPEI agreed to assist Liberia in the development of a comprehensive eye health system for the country,” said Dr Gullapalli N Rao - Founder and Chair, L V Prasad Eye Institute.
